Anyone who has planned an outdoor event in Southern Maryland knows the forecast can change quickly. A sunny morning can turn into an afternoon thunderstorm, and a calm day can end with a gusty evening off the water. A tent is one of the best ways to protect an outdoor event, but a tent is not a storm shelter. The best results come from planning ahead.

Here is how to prepare your tent event for rain and wind, and what to do if the weather turns serious.

1. Choose the Right Tent for Your Ground

The surface under your tent matters. Pole tents are staked into the ground and work best on open grass. Frame tents are supported by a self-standing aluminum frame, so they are a good choice for hard surfaces like driveways, decks and parking lots where deep staking is not an option.

Not sure which fits your site? Our free on-site inspection is the place to sort out ground conditions, slopes, overhead branches and other obstacles before your event.

2. Add Sidewalls

Optional sidewalls are available for all of our tents and help protect guests from blowing rain and wind. Solid white sidewalls offer the most protection, while cathedral window and clear panoramic styles keep the space bright. See all of the options in our sidewall guide.

3. Think About Water on the Ground

Even when the tent keeps rain off your guests, wet ground can still be a problem. Low spots collect water, and grass gets muddy fast. Mention any low or soggy areas of your yard or venue during your inspection. Flooring options such as full-tent carpeting and dance floors can make a wet-weather event more comfortable.

4. Know the Limits of a Tent

A rental tent is built to shelter your guests from ordinary rain, sun and wind. It is not designed to protect people from severe weather. If lightning is nearby or the forecast calls for high winds or a severe storm, the safest choice is to get people into a permanent building or vehicle. Talk with your rental company ahead of time about what to do if conditions get dangerous, and make sure the host knows who will make the call.

5. Watch the Forecast and Keep Us in the Loop

Check the forecast several days out and again the morning of your event. If the forecast changes, contact us as early as possible. Last-minute additions such as sidewalls, heaters or fans may be possible, though availability is not guaranteed, so do not wait until the last minute.

6. Have a Plan B

Every outdoor event should have a backup plan. That might mean a nearby indoor space, a delayed start time or a clear way to move guests quickly. Share the plan with your caterer, DJ, photographer and key family members so everyone knows what to do.

7. Power and Lighting

Storms often bring early darkness and the possibility of power loss. Ask about lighting and our 7500-watt Yamaha generators if your venue does not have reliable power. Chandeliers, string lights and bistro lights keep the space comfortable and safe.

Weather Planning FAQs

Do I need to worry about the weather if I rent a tent?

A tent shelters guests from rain and sun, and optional sidewalls help with wind and blowing rain. It is still smart to watch the forecast and have a backup plan for severe weather.

Can you set up a tent on a driveway or deck?

Frame tents are a good choice for hard surfaces. We will look at your site during your free on-site inspection and recommend the right option.

Can I rent heaters or fans for weather changes?

Yes. We rent LB White propane tent heaters, floor fans and clip-on pole fans.

What if the weather forecast changes right before my event?
